Valhalla Hunt Club
Trap Shoot, Pheasant Hunt and Lunch
Craig Hospital Patients

Our group today consists of hunters from all over the country, the van from Craig Hospital arrives at 10:30 and we head straight to the trap range. These guys are great shots, the clays didn’t have a chance. Then we head down to the clubhouse for some lunch and chocolate chip cookies the size of pizza’s. Lunch is over and it’s time to hunt pheasants in the tall grass. The dogs are ready, I believe hunting dogs are always ready. Dogs go on point, pheasants fly and pheasants fall. Everyone is smiling and having a great day except for the pheasants but they will taste good tonight back at the hospital.

It’s a warm fall day in Colorado, and today we have patients from Craig Hospital attending. We start with some instruction on the trap range, the participants will be shooting from the track chairs, which will help them get comfortable for the pheasant hunt after lunch, most of the shooters have had prior experience at the trap and bird hunting. After everyone has had plenty of practice, we head to the clubhouse for lunch. Then it’s time to head up to the grass and milo for the pheasant hunt. The dogs are ready and we use two track chairs to get started along with the guides and volunteers. The dogs point, the birds flush and the shots are on target. There will be pheasants for dinner! Everyone has had a great day.

Pheasant Hunt for Craig Hospital Patients

This Saturday was a great day to be in Colorado for several reasons.  While friends and family on the East Coast experienced frigid temperatures, high winds, flooding, and several feet of snow, the bright blue Colorado Sky and unseasonably warm temperatures greeted the Craig Hospital patients and their families at Valhalla Bijou hunt club in Bennett, Colorado.  After a brief meet and greet session, the four patients were treated to two hours of safety and shotgun instruction by Bob Adwar and Master Shooting Instructor Warren Watson.  After about an hour and a half of position tweaking, gun mount adjustments, and follow through practice, the two instructors had the patients breaking clays at various angles and with increasing regularity.  Towards the end of the practice session and after the angles became more challenging, Warren kindly reminded several of the new shooters that a pheasant was considerably larger than a clay.

This fueled their anticipation for the upcoming pheasant hunt as they headed down for lunch provided by Stephanie MacLennan and the Valhalla staff.   After enjoying the Sloppy Joes sandwiches and potatoes, the group motored back up the hill and prepared to hop in the Argo ATV vehicles graciously provided by Bill at Clarke’s Equipment Rentals of Bennett.   Despite the incredible maneuverability of the Argo and the excellent bird-dogging tandem of Remington and his owner Devron, the birds proved to be a bit elusive this afternoon and the hunters managed to bag only two pheasants.  Despite not reaching their limits, the hunters and their families had a great afternoon and vowed to return as “Craig” alumni on future outings.

A Day at Valhalla Bijou Hunt Club

From the Front Range west of Denver to the plains to the east, the Rocky Mountain state had a blanket of snow and ice that prompted a last minute change in plans for the Craig Hospital pheasant hunt scheduled for this past Saturday.  Rather than try and have a hunt in the fields of Valhalla Bijou Hunt Club, the group decided that a day of shotgun instruction, trap shooting, and good food would be enough.  Although the morning temperature was a bit cool, the sun broke through by mid-morning and provided for a pleasant shooting day.

Three patients from Craig  hospital and their families joined us for several rounds of trap and expert instruction by SCI’s Humanitarian Chair for Colorado, Bob Adwar.   Barry, a visitor from the Zoomabilities company, demonstrated the company’s latest “ZoomChair” offering.  The patients and staff enjoyed watching the chair in action as it successfully navigated rough terrain, snowbanks, and muddy hills with both ease and remarkable power.  The rest of the morning was spent improving general shooting techniques (gun mounts, leads, and follow throughs)  thanks to Bob’s tutelage and watching the chair (which will become part of the Craig Hospital mobility offering).  A healthy turnout of volunteers and graduates from the Craig program including Gary Verrazano who  works with LIM359 which provides support for people with special needs. Around noon, the group was treated to a sloppy joes and pasta lunch thanks to Stephanie MacLennan and the Valhalla Bijou staff.   It was another good day and the group was excited about the possibility of another outing at Valhalla in January.
