Coldweather Outfitters – Humanitarian Outreach Program

Denver SCI Chapter Humanitarian Outreach Program
July 23, 2016
Coldweather Outfitters
Firestone, Colorado

It’s a beautiful and very hot day at our outing with Craig Hospital, Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters. We also have the Escoffier Culinary Academy cooking lunch for us.

We will be fishing the ponds from both shore and boats. We also have an archery range and instructor setup with both recurve and compound bows. The fishing is challenging due to the heat but most people manage to catch a few anyway. We have about 50 people today and everyone is having a good time. Around midday you can smell the barbecue on all the ponds, so everyone heads to the barn for lunch and conversation. It’s been a great day and some rest and healing for some today which is why these programs work.

The Vintagers hosting Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters

This is our Fourth Annual Vintagers Sporting Clay Shoot for Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters. Everyone arrives at 12:00 for lunch. At 1:00 we have a short talk about SCI, Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters and discuss all the fishing and hunting outings that we provide. Robert Nikkel from the Vintagers talks about his group and their tradition of shooting vintage side by side shotguns. Now it is time to squad up and head down for the sporting clays course and to have some fun. It’s been a great day and a big thanks to the Vintagers and the men and women who have served our Country.

It’s a beautiful morning in the Colorado Rockies, we have a group of wounded warriors and their families for a day of instruction, fly fishing, and a gourmet lunch. The program is called Anglers of Honor and is a part of the Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing CLub. We start with instruction from the guide staff along with some coffee and donuts. Then we head to the river with plenty of help and instruction. Some big and small trout are caught, but we are here to enjoy ourselves and do some healing. It’s 1:00 and we head to the lodge for a great lunch, conversation and some encouragement on fly fishing and the future.

We are in a beautiful canyon in the Front Range of Colorado at one of the top fly fishing clubs. We have eight wounded Vets, all have TBI and one is a paraplegic who has a tractor chair so he can go right into the river. We start with some instruction from the six guides on basic fly fishing techniques; after about an hour we break up into small groups with the guides and head down to the river. Some of the vets get on big fish right away.

Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing with Wounded Vets and Operation TBIThe sun is out along with the smiles, there is the peace and relaxation that comes from fly fishing on a mountain stream. A small Thank You for our Vets that have given so much and who still suffer from their injuries. At 1:00 we head to the club house for a gourmet lunch and some fish stories. All the Vets are given fly rods and reels to take home to continue to enjoy the Colorado rivers and lakes.
