The Bluffs – Pheasant Hunt
Byers, Colorado

Operation TBI Freedom and Freedom Hunters

DSCI Humanitarian Outreach Program

It is a very hot day on the Eastern plains of Colorado, we gather at the club house around 11:00 and start with basic safety instructions. Then we move to the trap range for a tune up. We have seven Vets anxious to see the birds fly. We have lunch around Noon and discuss the upcoming hunt. We will break into two groups, one using a pointing dog and one a flushing dog. Lunch is over and the hunt begins, we head out to the tall grass and the dogs go to work. Birds fly some keep flying and others will be dinner. Everyone is having a great time and everyone shoots at least one bird but the heat takes its toll on the dogs so after a couple of hours we had back to the lodge for bird cleaning 101. It has been a great day for all.

Thanks to the staff at The Bluffs and a big thanks to all the Vets!

Pheasant Hunt for Wounded Vets

The Bluffs
Byers, Colorado
Pheasant Hunt for Wounded Vets with Freedom Hunters and Operation TBI

Vets and volunteers arrive at the club house at The Bluffs Hunt Club at 11:00. We get acquainted, have a safety talk and go to the trap range for some practice and instruction. By 12:00 we are ready for lunch and talk about the pheasant hunt.

Usually we would be in two or three man groups with two guides and dogs; but, today one of the guides was sick so we will be in one large group which made it important to discuss safety and positioning in the field. At 1:00 we head to a large grass meadow and the hunt begins. We are seeing plenty of birds and the shooting begins. By the end of the hunt everyone gets at least one bird and more importantly had a great time. Everyone is safe, and with a group this big that is a home run.

The Bluffs – Pheasant hunt

February 20, 2016

Pheasant Hunt for Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters
The Bluffs
Byers, Colorado

It’s an exceptionally warm day in Eastern Colorado and we will be hosting a pheasant hunt for some Wounded Warriors. Everyone arrives at 11:00, we start with some trap shooting for a warm up before the real deal starts. At 12:00 we head into the lodge for a lunch and discuss the game plan for the hunt. At 1:00 we break into two groups. I will guide one and Darren Codday will guide the other. The dogs are on overdrive and want to hit the fields and find birds. Shotguns are firing, birds are falling… well some of them anyway. It’s a great hunt, everyone is having a good time and everyone goes home with meat for the table.

Pheasant Hunt for Wounded Vets, Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters

It’s a cold Colorado morning on the plains and the Vets arrive at 11:00 and we head to the trap range for some practice and instruction. Then we go to the club house for a hot lunch. We have six wounded vets, one will be using a track chair for the hunt. We split up into two groups with the guides and dogs, then head out to the field. We will be hunting pheasants, chucker and quail.

The dogs go on point and the birds are flying. Some end up as dinner and others fly away. At the end of the day everyone had meat for the table and all have a smile. A day in the outdoors to heal and rejuvinate.

The sun is out, the snow is melted and the jackets are off. It’s 11:00 and everyone is arriving at the clubhouse. Dave and I take the five Vets to the trap station for some instruction and safety talk in preparation for the hunt. The hunters start feeling confident so we head inside for lunch. It’s now 1:00 and everyone is ready to go; we gather the dogs, jump in the trucks and head down to the fields. We split up into two groups, the dogs do what they love to do, birds fly and guns fire. Food for the table and feathers to make flies.

It’s the beginning of spring and closing of the pheasant season. The sun is shining and the temperature warm. We have a great lunch and discuss the upcoming hunt. After lunch we head to the trap machines for some practice. Then we round up the dogs, jump in the trucks and head down to the fields. I guide one group and Russell the other. We are on birds immediately, dogs are on point and the shooting begins. It’s a great day and all the vets go home with birds.
