The Bluffs – Pheasant Hunt
Byers, Colorado

Operation TBI Freedom and Freedom Hunters

DSCI Humanitarian Outreach Program

It is a very hot day on the Eastern plains of Colorado, we gather at the club house around 11:00 and start with basic safety instructions. Then we move to the trap range for a tune up. We have seven Vets anxious to see the birds fly. We have lunch around Noon and discuss the upcoming hunt. We will break into two groups, one using a pointing dog and one a flushing dog. Lunch is over and the hunt begins, we head out to the tall grass and the dogs go to work. Birds fly some keep flying and others will be dinner. Everyone is having a great time and everyone shoots at least one bird but the heat takes its toll on the dogs so after a couple of hours we had back to the lodge for bird cleaning 101. It has been a great day for all.

Thanks to the staff at The Bluffs and a big thanks to all the Vets!

Pheasant Hunt for Vets with Terry Miller

January 28, 2017

DSCI Humanitarian Outreach Program

Terry Miller Farm
Sterling, Colorado
Operation TBI and Freedom Hunters
Wounded Warrior Pheasant Hunt

It’s the last weekend of the pheasant season. We will be hunting the tall grass next to the corn fields thanks to Terry Miller and his farm which is covered with pheasants. We head out to the fields with the Vets, dogs and guides and the pheasants are flushing everywhere. Mostly hens which is common for a late season hunt but there are roosters as well. We manage to knock some down for the dinner table. It has been a great hunt for all and the Vets go home with pheasant meat. After the hunt we head to Sterling for lunch.

A big thanks to Terry and his brothers for a great day!

Hello Bob,

I was honored to be part of the Veteran’s hunt you put together with Brother Terry on his farm. It was rewarding to see the group of former soldiers work hard on such a windy day to get shots at the wild roosters this late in the season. It was also great to see the large number of hens Terry has on the property.

The habitat Terry has developed on his property has taken years to establish. I have assisted Terry using resources from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Pheasant Habitat Improvement Program and the local Northeast Colorado Chapter of Pheasants Forever. As a Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist, it’s my job to help private landowners like Terry understand what is needed for quality wildlife habitat and how to access programs from Pheasants Forever and State and Federal agencies to complete habitat projects.

Thank you again for giving the men and women who have served our country the opportunity to enjoy a Colorado Pheasant hunt.

Jerry

Trap Shoot, Pheasant Hunt and Lunch
Craig Hospital Patients

Our group today consists of hunters from all over the country, the van from Craig Hospital arrives at 10:30 and we head straight to the trap range. These guys are great shots, the clays didn’t have a chance. Then we head down to the clubhouse for some lunch and chocolate chip cookies the size of pizza’s. Lunch is over and it’s time to hunt pheasants in the tall grass. The dogs are ready, I believe hunting dogs are always ready. Dogs go on point, pheasants fly and pheasants fall. Everyone is smiling and having a great day except for the pheasants but they will taste good tonight back at the hospital.

Pheasant & Goose Hunt
For Operation TBI Freedom

Hosted by Alan Nebrado

We have some Vets from Operation TBI this weekend for some pheasant and goose hunting. We meet at Allen’s farm in Holyoke Saturday morning for the pheasant hunt, walking the fields with the dogs and volunteers. It’s a late season, we flush 20 to 30 birds mostly hens but we manage to knock down some roosters. Everyone gets a chance and we are all having a great time. It is time for lunch and we head into town for some barbecue prepared by Allen’s friend who just opened the restaurant last week. After lunch a smaller group guided by Allen head back to the fields. The group will be staying in Holyoke tonight and will be up with the sun for the goose hunt.

A big thanks to Allen, the volunteers and the birds that cooperated!
